I looked into the area around the University of Amsterdam and it's perfectly safe. No more accidents than anywhere else, and unsafe neighborhoods aren't really an issue in the Netherlands. Crime happens, but nothing to worry about.

I live near Osdorp Plein and it's way better than I expected. It's multicultural with a big Muslim community, but everyone minds their own business. Compared to Oud West, people seem friendlier here. Fat bike kids are around but act like typical teenagers. As a straight middle-aged man, my experience might differ from others, but I feel safe and comfortable.

Living in Amsterdam is amazing for quality of life and career, but the housing crisis is real. There's just too much demand—it seems everyone wants to move here, and building more isn't a simple fix because of the city's geography and charm. It's a double-edged sword: being in such a desirable place is great, but finding affordable housing is a nightmare. If you're coming here, be ready for a tough search.

I lived in Dijkgraafplein for a year while studying at UvA. It's convenient with shops nearby but feels empty and lacks soul, and it's far from the center. I didn't have trouble with bike gangs, but others have. Compared to Oud West or the center, this is my least favorite area, but it's not terrible.
