Building a Balanced UCAS Application
When you apply through UCAS, you can list up to five university choices. A sensible approach is to split them into three groups: reach, core, and safety. This helps you aim high while keeping a realistic back-up plan.
Using Predicted Grades to Choose Your List
Your predicted grades are a key guide for choosing which universities to apply to. For each course, check the typical entry requirements. Match your predicted grades against them:
- Reach choices: Universities where your predicted grades are slightly below the typical offer. They are worth trying, but they are not guaranteed.
- Core choices: Universities where your predicted grades match the typical offer. These are your main targets.
- Safety choices: Universities where your predicted grades are comfortably above the typical offer. These give you a secure option.
Your Personal Statement as a Strategy Tool
Your personal statement is one of the few places where you can show universities how you match their course. Use it to explain your interest in the subject, your relevant skills, and what you can bring to the course. A clear, focused personal statement can strengthen every application on your list, including your reach choices.

Putting It Together
A balanced UCAS list gives you a range of options without wasting any of your five choices. Use your predicted grades to set the level of each application, and write a personal statement that supports all of them. With a well-planned list, you give yourself the best chance of receiving offers that fit you.
